Getting Ready for Heaven

Series 2: Lesson 10:

The State of the Dead: Where are They?

God created Adam and Eve with conditional immortality; the only way that could have change is if they ate of the tree that God told them not to eat of, for in the day they eat thereof they would surely die. What does it mean to die? It means to cease to live, or cessation of life.

As we all know, Adam and Eve disobeyed the Lord's command and ate of that tree. That very day they began to die.

1. In Genesis 3:19, what did the Lord tell Adam? Fill in the blanks: In the ________ of thy _______ shall thou eat bread, until thou __________ unto the ________; for out of it ________ thou taken: For ________ thou art, and unto _________ shall thou return.

From that day forward man began to die. Because of their sin, we all inherit the sinful nature. We all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. So the sentence of death has been passed on all men, for all have sinned. Eventually the time came when Adam and Eve died and everyone who lived previous to this present age have died. Enoch and Elijah are two exceptions - They were translated. Joseph, Joshua Abraham, Jacob, David, Daniel, Solomon, prophets, apostles, Mary the mother of Jesus, and the countless billions who lived on the earth during those periods, all died.

2. What happens when a person dies? Does the dead know anything? Let us see what the Bible says. Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6; Fill in the blanks: For the _________ know that they shall die: but the _________ _________ not anything, neither have they anymore a __________; for the __________ of them is forgotten. Also their _________,and their ________, and their __________, is now perished; Neither have they anymore a portion for _________ in anything that is done under the sun.

3. What does the Psalmist say about death? Psalm 6:5 115:17; 104:29. Fill in the blanks: For in death there is no ________ of Thee: In the ______ who shall give thee thanks? The dead praise not the Lord, neither any that go down into silence. Thou hidest Thy face, they are _________: Thou takest away their ______, they die, and return to their dust.

The spirit or breath is what God gives and takes. At the creation of Adam, the Lord formed him from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and he became a living soul. At death that which originally came from the earth returns to the earth, and that which came from God return to God.

4. Can the dead praise the Lord? Psalm 115:17_______________________________
5. What becomes of man's thoughts at death? Psalm 146:4. ______________________
6. What does the dead know about his family? Job 14:21. ______________________

7. By what figure does the Bible represent death? 1 Kings 2:10; 11:43; 14:20, 31; 15:8; 2 Chronicles 21:1; 26:23; Job 14:10-12; Psalm 13:3; Daniel 12:2; Matthew 9:24; Mark 5:39; John 11:11-14; Matthew 27:52; Acts 7:60; 1 Corinthians 15:51, 52; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17; 2 Peter 3:4, ______________________________________ .

Death is a temporary state of unconsciousness while the person awaits the resurrection. The Bible repeatedly calls this intermediate state a "sleep."

8. Where does Daniel say the dead are sleeping? Daniel 12:2. _______________

9. Where did Job say he will await his final change? Job 14:10-14; Job 17:13 ___________

10.Where did Lazarus go after death? John 11:38, 39,43. ________________________
11. Where did Jesus raise Lazarus from? John 12:17; John 11:43,44 _______________

12. Not many days after Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead he laid down His own life: Where did they put Him? John 19:41-42 _____________________________________

14. What admonition does the wise man Solomon give to those who are alive? Ecclesiastes 9: 10 Fill in the blanks: Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might, for there is no _______, nor ______, nor,______ nor ______ in the grave whither thou goest.

The grave is where a person goes at death. No matter where they put you: in a cave, or six feet under ground, whether you were eaten by dog, or fish, or is cremated; no matter what happens to you after you die, you are still in the grave.

15. Is there any hope for the dead? Fill in the blanks: John 11:25: Jesus said unto her, " I am the ____________ and the _________: He that believeth in Me, though he were _________, yet shall he live.

16. When will those who believe in Christ be raised from the dead? Fill in the blanks: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-16. But I would not have you to be _________, _________, concerning them which are asleep, that ye ________ not, even as others which have no hope. For if we ________ that Jesus died and ________ again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him. For this we ________ _________ you by the ________ of the Lord that we which are alive and __________ unto the coming of the Lord shall not __________ them which are asleep. For the Lord Himself shall __________ from __________ with a shout, with the voice of the ___________, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall ________ first.

17. Fill in the blanks: John 5:28,29 Marvel not at this: For the _______ is coming, in the which all that are in the ________ shall hear His __________, and shall come forth: they that have done _________, unto the _____________ of life; and they that have done ________, unto the ___________ of damnation.

18. What does the Psalmist say of his soul? Fill in the blanks: Psalm 49:15 But God will _______ my ________ from the _________ of the grave: For He shall receive me.

19. What goes to heaven when a person dies? Psalm 146:4. Ecclesiastes 3:19 - 21; Ecclesiastes12:7; Fill in the blanks:His breath __________ forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his __________ perish. For that which befalleth the sons of men _______ _________; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one ________; so that a man hath no ____________above a beast: for all is vanity. All go unto one ______. All are of the ________, and all _________ to dust again. Who ________ the ________ of man that goeth ___________, and the _______ of the beast that goeth downward to the earth? Then shall the ________ return to the _________ as it was: and the ________ shall return unto God who ________ it.

The Bible uses spirit and breath interchangeably. At death the spirit or breath goes to God who gave it. He holds it in His care until the resurrection day when He will once again restore that breath unto you. You will again become a living soul. The breath or spirit does not have any brain, eyes, ears, mouth etc. It is just like the wind. Therefore it cannot act, think, hear, see or speak outside of the body. Breath plus body equals a living soul. Genesis 2:7.

Dear friend, there is no intimation in the word of God to suggest that some part of man lives on after death, and can come to visit their loved ones. The dead returns to his place no more.
The apostle Peter in Acts 2:31, said that David is not ascended into heaven. In Job chapter 14, Job gave no indication that a person goes to heaven at death. Read the whole chapter. The dead knows nothing.

May the Lord bless you as you continue to study His Word.
