17. When does the Sabbath begins and ends? Leviticus 23:32, Deuteronomy 16:6, Mark 1:32, Luke 4:40 ___________________________________________________
In Leviticus chapter 23:1-37, the Lord told Moses to teach the children of Israel how to keep the feast of the Lord or the various Sabbaths they were to observe. The first to be mentioned was the weekly Sabbath which was to be celebrated on the seventh day of every week (verse 3); then the yearly Sabbaths- The Passover was to be kept on the fourteen day of the first month at even; and the fifteenth day of the same month was the feast of unleavened bread (verse 5-8); the first day of the seventh month was a yearly Sabbath, and the tenth day of the seventh month the Day of Atonement was to be observed. In Leviticus 23:32, the Lord told them to celebrate the Day of Atonement (tenth day of the seventh month) from the evening of the ninth day to the evening of the tenth day; from even to even or from evening to evening they were to celebrate the Sabbath. The next text, Deuteronomy 16:6 is even more explicit, here the Lord was telling them again how to keep the Passover. Here it not only speaks of "even" but it also says what even is- at the going down of the sun they were to begin to keep the Passover. This tells us that evening begins at the going down of the sun. Therefore the Sabbath begins at the going down of the sun on the sixth day of each week. When does the Sabbath ends? Leviticus 23:32 already told us that from "even unto even" the Sabbath is to be celebrated. Let us see if the Bible is more explicit as to when it ends. Mark 1:32, If you read from verse 21 of this chapter, you will discover that Jesus went to church or to the synagogue on the Sabbath. There was a sick man there whom he healed. Jesus healed on the Sabbath, but because of the prejudice of the Jews He did not make the Sabbath a day of healing. Thus verse 32 tells us that when the sun did set that Sabbath day, they brought unto Him all that were sick and He healed them. This shows us that sunset signaled the end of the Sabbath. Luke 4:40 reiterated the same fact as Mark. When the sun was set on the Sabbath day, they brought unto Him all that were sick so that He might heal them. Let us sum up what we have discovered thus far from these texts.
Let us sum up what we have discovered thus far from these texts:
a. We should celebrate the Sabbath from even to even, or, from evening to evening. Leviticus 23:32 last part.
b. The Sabbath begins at the going down of the sun the day before the Sabbath (Friday or sixth day) Leviticus 23:32 first part, Deuteronomy 16:6.
c. The Sabbath ends at the going down of the sun on Sabbath - the Seventh day of the week (Saturday) Mark 1:32; Luke 4: 40.
18. The Sabbath will also be kept in Heaven. Fill in the blanks: Isaiah 66:23: From one new moon to another and from one _________ to another shall all flesh come to _________ before Me saith the Lord of host.
The Sabbath was hallowed (made holy) at creation. After six days of work the Lord called one more day into existence which He named the Seventh day. On that day He "Rested". Because he had Rested on that day, He blessed it, sanctified it, and set it apart for holy use. He gave it to Adam as a day of rest. It was to be observed as a memorial of God?s creative work, and thus a sign of God?s power and His love. The Sabbath, along with the other commandments, was passed down from father to children through successive generations. During the children of Israel sojourn in the land of Egypt they forgot the commandments of God. But after God brought them out of Egypt, one of the first things they were taught to do was to keep the Sabbath- Exodus chapter 16. At Sinai the Sabbath was embodied in the heart of the Ten Commandments. It was written in stone by the fingers of God not once but twice; and like the other precepts of the Decalogue, it is of imperishable obligation. The first words of it say: Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy. You cannot remember something that you did not previously know. The Sabbath is part of the law which Christ says will endure till heaven and earth pass away; and even in heaven the Sabbath will be observed. Matthew 5:18; Isaiah 66:23.
Let us recapitulate one more time some of the things we have covered in this lesson.
The Seventh Day was made a Sabbath at creation.
(b) The Seventh Day is the Bible Sabbath; and therefore, also, the Christian Sabbath.
(c) God wrote the Sabbath commandment in "stone" in the heart of the Ten Commandments at Sinai.
(d) We are to rest from our secular labor on the Sabbath as God rested from His.
(e) The Sabbath is to be observed from the going down of the sun on the six day of the week to the going down of the sun on the seventh day or Sabbath.
(f) Jesus and His disciples kept the Sabbath.
(g) The disciples were the first to be called Christians or Christlike and they kept the Sabbath; therefore, the seventh day of the week is the real Christian Sabbath.
(h) The Sabbath will be observed in heaven.
The beneficent Creator, after six days of Creation, rested on the seventh day and instituted the Sabbath for all people as a memorial of Creation. The fourth commandment of God's unchangeable law requires the observance of this seventh-day Sabbath as the day of rest, worship and ministry in harmony with the teaching and practice of Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath. The Sabbath is a day of delightful communion with God and with one another. It is a symbol of our redemption in Christ, a sign of our sanctification, a token of our allegiance, and a foretaste of our eternal future in God?s kingdom. The Sabbath is God's perpetual sign or seal of His eternal covenant between Him and His people. Joyful observance of this holy time from evening to evening, sunset to sunset, is a celebration of God's creative and redemptive acts.
My prayer is that you would accept God's Sabbath for it is a sign between us and Him, that wel may know that He is the Lord that doth sanctify us. And that ye may know that the Lord is our God. Ezekiel 20:12, 20.
